Greening the Capital: Friends of Trees in Salem

Friends of Trees is excited to be planting in Salem this planting season! We look forward to continuing the momentum started in April 2013 at our Arbor Day planting at Hoover Elementary School, when we planted 20 large trees around the school and at Hoover School City Park with the help of more than 70 volunteers.

Friends of Trees will be organizing four planting events between December 2013 and April 2014 to help increase neighborhood tree canopy cover, as well as to restore the natural areas in and around Clark Creek ParkOur first event will be held on Saturday, December 7th from 8:45am - 1:00pm at Clark Creek Park.

Here are all of the remaining dates we'll be in Salem this season:

  • Saturday, March 8th :: NESCA and Lansing neighborhood tree planting
  • Saturday, March 22nd :: Clark Creek Park restoration planting
  • Saturday, April 5th :: Morningside Elementary School tree planting
  • Saturday, April 26th :: Clark Creek Park Tree Care event

If you'd like to join our Salem mailing list, please fill out this form and we'll send you updated information about all of our events as soon as it becomes available:  Salem Interest Form

Our Green Space Initiative program will be coordinating two events at Clark Creek Park to plant native trees and shrubs along the creek to provide shade over this prominent south Salem stream. For our first event in December, we will focus on planting larger trees in areas previously dominated by Himalayan blackberry immediately next to the creek, as well as up to two dozen trees in the upland areas of the park. Our spring event will be oriented towards filling in the riparian zone with bareroot native trees and shrubs. We will also be working with nearby private property owners in the Morningside neighborhood - both upstream and downstream from our restoration site - offering free invasive species control and native plants.

Our Neighborhood Trees program will be coordinating two events focused on planting large (8-12') street trees in the NESCA neighborhood and at Morningside Elementary School. Our hope is to plant about 40 trees in the NESCA neighborhood in March and to plant 20-25 trees at Morningside Elementary School in April. These efforts will support the goal of achieving a 23% tree canopy cover throughout Salem.  Currently, the Morningside neighborhood is at 19% canopy cover.

You can join these planting efforts simply by showing up dressed for the weather and wearing sturdy shoes - no need to RSVP! Please check our online calendar for more details of all of our planting events or contact Andy or Jenny at 503-595-0213 for more information.

Volunteer planters (and groups!) always needed

Salem 4.6.13 - 2

We organize public tree planting events every Saturday morning from October - May and we always need help planting the trees.  Planting with Friends of Trees is a great way to get outside, learn how to plant trees, meet people, fulfill service learning requirements and help make the Salem region greener and healthier - all at once!

We'll be planting in Salem on the following dates:

  • Saturday, December 7th :: Clark Creek Park restoration planting
  • Saturday, March 8th :: NESCA and Lansing neighborhood tree planting
  • Saturday, March 22nd :: Clark Creek Park restoration planting
  • Saturday, April 5th :: Morningside Elementary School tree planting

We provide coffee and breakfast treats to get you fueled up, as well as gloves, tools and trained volunteer guidance.

**We love groups!  Friends of Trees planting events are excellent ways for groups to learn team-building skills, have fun together and give back to the community.  RSVPs are kindly requested for groups of more than 5 people - please click HERE to do so.**

Otherwise, there is no need to RSVP in advance.  If you're under 18 years old, please bring a signed copy of our Youth Waiver with you to the event.

If you'd like to join our Salem mailing list, please fill out this form and we'll send you updated information about all of our events as soon as it becomes available:  Salem Interest Form
