Simply put, volunteers are the backbone of Friends of Trees. We could not do what we do without the enthusiasm, dedication and energy that all volunteers bring each season to the planning, preparation and implementation of our program goals.

Over the course of the 2012-2013 planting season 4,466 individuals volunteered 37,250 hours to Friends of Trees! We are inspired by this outpouring of enthusiasm, talent, and energy by so many throughout the communities where we work.

Read the results of our 2012-2013 Friends of Trees volunteer survey. This survey was made possible by a grant from REI and the 529 respondents who shared their time and thoughts with us.

Here we honor our most dedicated volunteers who excelled in their roles and helped make Friends of Trees an even stronger and better organization.  They deserve our special recognition for their efforts.

The following volunteers received awards at the annual Volunteer Awards Potluck at the end of the 2013-14 planting season:

2013-2014 Award Winners

Volunteer of the Year - Don Crossley

For his deep and sustained commitment to Friends of Trees, for supporting our NT plantings as a Super Stager, for helping to crew lead at community tree care events as a Pruning Leader and for helping both of our planting programs prepare for numerous weekend events as a Friday office volunteer.

The Conan Award - Mike & Pat Rowen

An award created in 2012 to recognize those crew leaders who lead crews for the NT and GSI programs and who set themselves apart from this exclusive group with their leadership skills and sustained dedication.  Named in honor of Conan Harmon-Walker -- a leader among leaders at Friends of Trees.

Mike and Pat Rowen joined the team in Nov. 2013, and the GSI team in Jan. 2014. Throughout their first season they amassed a total of 37 planting events as a team.

Neighborhood Team of the Year - Piedmont-Woodlawn

Piedmont/Woodlawn plantings are always smooth, well-organized, successful and positive planting events.  PLUS - this tree team manages to throw an exciting post-planting after party for volunteers.

Neighborhood Coordinator team: Christy Hudson, Justin Thompson, Megan Van De Mark, Wren Shiffler

Office Volunteer of the Year - Kara Eads

Kara has been a leader on Friday mornings at the FOT office, working with other volunteers to help prepare for our weekend planting events by pairing thousands of gloves and assembling hundreds of crew leader clipboards.

The Garry Oak Award - Nancy Buley

A new award created in 2013 to recognize a volunteer who most embodies the spirit of community, volunteerism, good work and fun that Friends of Trees -- and our mascot Garry Oak -- strive to achieve every day through our work.

Nancy is a long-time volunteer member of our Board of Directors, a passionate advocate and a dedicated volunteer for Friends of Trees.
