Linear Arboretum

The NE Ainsworth Linear Arboretum is unique among U.S. arboretums. It spans actual city blocks and is composed of street and yard trees.

The NE Ainsworth Linear Arboretum makes it possible for residents to view 57 different species of city trees within walking or bicycling distance of each other.

Most of the arboretum's trees were planted by Friends of Trees over the past five years. Many others were planted by individual residents or the city of Portland. Longtime Friends of Trees volunteer Jim Gersbach, a resident of the Concordia neighborhood, conceived the idea of the linear arboretum.

The arboretum, which extends along two miles of NE Ainsworth St., from NE ML King Jr. Blvd. to Fernhill Park, includes many species of trees not commonly planted in Portland yet. Friends of Trees hopes that people who see these trees in the arboretum might consider planting them in their yards and increase species diversity in Portland. This will help prevent massive tree loss from species-specific diseases and pests.

Below is a list of the trees planted along NE Ainsworth, including new trees planted on February 17, 2007. Some of the tree species are repeated because they have been planted at more than one location. You can print an updated Linear Arboretum Brochure to guide you through the arboretum.
