Arborists
Trees slow climate change, help us conserve energy, and improve the quality of our air and water. To keep our urban forest healthy, individual trees need to be planted properly. They also need proper care and maintenance. You can learn more by reading our tree planting instructions and tree care tips.
Though each of us can provide basic care for our trees, sometimes we need the expertise of an arborist-whether to determine the best place to plant a new tree in our yard, to prune a tree properly, to remove a damaged tree, or to learn if our tree needs treatment for a disease or infestation.
Certified arborists are required to take an extensive test covering tree pathology, rehabilitation, and the latest techniques in arboriculture. Certified arborists must also have a minimum of three years of experience. Arborists can only be certified through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).
Friends of Trees doesn't endorse individual arborists, but the following list of Arborist Partners have worked with Friends of Trees to enhance our urban forest. All are certified arborists.
Friends of Trees Arborist Partners
Our Arborist Partners are listed in alphabetical order. You can click on each name to learn more about the individual services offered. All of our Arborist Partners are certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). Those who are members of the ISA have "ISA" after their name. Those who are members of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the ISA (PNW-ISA) have "PNW-ISA" after their name.

Tips for Selecting an Arborist
Provided by the PNW-ISA
1. Hire someone who is bonded, licensed and insured.
2. Ask for references and get more than one bid.
3. Ask for a Certified Arborist, someone who has passed the International Society of Arboriculture's extensive certification exam covering all aspects of tree care.
4. Membership in professional organizations such as the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), the National Arborist Association (NAA) or the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA) demonstrates a willingness on the part of the arborist to stay up-to-date on the latest techniques and information.
6. A good arborist won't recommend topping and should try to talk you out of it if you request to have a tree topped.
7. Never allow a climber to use spikes or spurs to climb your tree unless the tree is to be removed.
