To fulfill our mission of building community and tree canopy, Friends of Trees provides trees to homeowners at less than half—sometimes less than five percent—of the actual $175 cost. Most of the time homeowners pay even less than Friends of Trees pays the wholesale nursery to buy the trees, and we also need to cover the cost of staff, insurance, trucks and gas, tools, volunteer recruitment, and training. To fill in the gaps, Friends of Trees relies on grants and donations.
Friends of Trees brings people in the Portland-Vancouver area together to plant and care for city trees and urban natural areas. Each year Portland's trees remove millions of pounds of pollutants from the air and keep half a billion gallons of stormwater from polluting our rivers, according to a city of Portland Parks & Recreation City Nature-Urban Forestry study. Since our founding in 1989, Friends of Trees' volunteers have planted hundreds of thousands of trees in the Portland-Vancouver metro area to increase our beneficial tree cover.
